Dj Training Program
New DJ Training Goals:
- learn the elements essential to having flow in a set
- transitions between different genres of music
- transitions between different groups of blues
- having small steps in between transitions
- making large transitions purposeful and rare, using “pause” to your advantage
- always relating your next song to your last song
- learn to troubleshoot audio equipment
- be able to recognize and identify different groups of blues
- different styles of blues (Delta, Chicago, …)
- danceable blues
- what is blues at Burn Blue
- be able to distinguish between blues and other genres
- understand and agree to abide by Burn Blue’s DJ Guidelines
- understand and agree to participate in Burn Blue hosts’ feedback process
- be aware of resources for buying and researching new music
- learn DJ etiquette
Phase One: Gather Information from your coach and prepare music
Possible Activities:
- Make a sample play-list and get feedback on it from your coach
- Talk to your coach about the elements of flow
- Discuss one of your coach’s play-lists with them
- Discuss defining elements of blues and different groups of blues with your coach
- Read and/or discuss Burn Blue’s DJ Guidelines
- Ask your coach about how they research and buy new music
- Be in the booth with your coach while they DJ a live set
Phase Two: DJ live with your coach
Possible Activities:
- DJ a half hour set at Burn Blue with your coach in the booth with you
- DJ an hour set at Burn Blue trading off songs with your coach
- DJ two alternating 15 min sets with your coach at Burn Blue
Phase Three: DJ live by yourself and get feedback from your coach and/or the host
- Feedback can be given throughout your set, at the end of your set, or both at the discretion of the host.
- Have a wrap up meeting with your coach:
- review training goals, have you met them?
- do a self review
- give your coach a hug
